Keeping it Simple

03/3/2005

"PEE IS GOOD"

A former friend had this simple truth written on the side of his guitar amp. Reading it, I would laugh while nodding my head in agreement yet how easy and often I forget to celebrate the simple things of life – like pee. My western humanity is so well in tack that I fail to recognize so much of the little beauties around me.

Ancient peoples had it right. They were very conscious of the little things and often built altars of remembrance to mark the moments. They were also adept at passing the stories down through their families to keep memory alive. Nothing was taken for granted. I forget within a day what I had for supper the night before.

Maybe that would change if I had to grow my own broccoli instead of running to the local Publix to pick up whenever is nagging my greedy craving. There is a chance I would actually remember to thank God for His provision if I had to fight the weather and critters in order to bring food to my table each day. Perhaps we would not be so wasteful as a culture if meat-eaters had to slay, gut, portion, and prepare their kill.

I find myself cringing whenever I see a TV show where food is randomly squandered. The first image that comes to mind is the David Letterman bit where he has people throw food off a building (or shot through a canon) onto an empty lot. Would he lack so much respect if he had to grow, prepare or scavenge for food? I always wonder why he doesn’t do something really radical and send that food to a neighborhood or country with starving people. I guess when you have much; the little that will sustain others just doesn’t come to mind.

It’s easy to look at nationally broadcast waste – hard to look into my heart at my own waste.

Daily, I waste hours and minutes, food and paper, energy and rest, opportunities and thoughts.

I forget to be thankful for my provisions.

I fail to recognize what’s around me.

I ignore the chance to tell people I love them.

And I forget to dance…

If I start by remembering that pee is indeed good, perhaps there is a chance I will remember the rest.

Peace,
zss
