The Magic Spoon
12/27/2004
Among the items I received as gifts this Christmas, one stands out from the others. It’s a simple thing – an unexpected present. An offering with no REAL value except the memories it carries and the laughter I cannot contain no matter how much I try.
It all about a spoon!
Yes friends and neighbors, I said a SPOON. Not one of those fancy spoons one finds in fine shops that cost a month’s wages. It’s one of those small plastic pink spoons – you know what I’m talking about -- the kind usually given freely at ice cream shops.
But this not just a spoon. This is a magic spoon. A spoon of belly laughs and long trips; of music and coffee; it’s the heartbeat of new friendships that seem old and comfortable. And, it has brought brightness to dark days.
I held the package to my breast when I opened it. I laughed for a long time recalling the events that brought the spoon into existence. And I held it in my lap as I made the phone call to the sender to say, "yes, I remember". And "yes, thanks that you remember too."
This exchange reminds me that the best gifts are not jewels and coins but laughter, love, and memories shared with friends.
Peace,
Zss
