Thinking

Jesus can be seen in the Love and Laughter of Friends.

On the Eve

I’m thinking of the day – rather the eve of the DAY and I’m never quite sure what to think.

I think of songs, and TV shows and cards – how they all seem to focus on family. Joining together of family in warm houses with big decorated trees and roaring fires in the fireplace. Always pictures of big supper spreads on the tables. This, amid news stories of crying people stuck in bus stations, airports, and on highways because they may not make it ‘home’ in time for the Christmas celebration.

But what is home? And what is family?

This time of the year always forces me to think of these terms – these foreign terms.

The world is arguing the meaning of "FAMILY" as it relates to heterosexuals and homosexuals. But what about the Orphans? What about those of us without family to head home to for the holidays?

I have always felt like an outsider during Christmas even when spending the celebration with friends and their families. I smile politely as they share stories of Christmas’ past and feel lost trying to navigate each family’s traditions. I have lifted glasses to the memory of relatives I’ve never met and laughed at jokes I don’t really understand.

But, I look forward to it. Sometimes shaking at the unfamiliar, I look forward to it.

Have a very Merry Christmas.

I need to shower and dress so I can visit with the family of friends for the Eve of the Day.

Peace,
Zss
