Beauty

04/07/2005

Although neither of us is gay, my friend Karen and I have been having a playful contention over which one of us gets to marry our friend Bonnie.

Despite not being "beautiful" in the classic sense, Bonnie is the most magnificent person I know. She’s absolutely gorgeous! She has the sweetest heart, is a hard worker, loves to cook, entertain, fix stuff, catalog things, attend concerts, watch trading spaces, hang out with kids, and is devoted to Jesus. Best of all, Bonnie loves with every part of her being.

Recently, I recognized that when I introduce her to others in my social circle, I say, "hey I would like you to meet my beautiful friend Bonnie…" I think I noticed her radiant eyes first when we met. Then I noticed her willing, giving spirit, and then I noticed the "extra baggage" she carries.

If I were male, Bonnie is the type of woman I would want in my life. No pretense…just love. It’s hard for me to understand why some guy hasn’t swooped down from his grand stead and gathered her to himself. I do not want to think that shallowness is what keeps men from banging down her door.

It’s amazing how many people I have meet in this life’s journey who are visually pleasing but soon become the ugliest individual I have ever known once they open their mouths.

I have male friends who have dated heartless beauty queens yet stayed with them because they "looked good together".

And then there’s Bonnie.

I have told her that if she marries me, we would never sleeping together unless we snoozed while watching a movie on the couch. She can have her own room, and I would encourage her to cheat. So far, she has turned both Karen and me down.

Beauty of the flesh fades away. Beauty of the heart remains for generations.

Peace,
zss
