Of Dogs and Cats
01/09/2005
A friend presented a long whined for kitten to her daughter for Christmas. Even I think it’s a bit cute – cute in an "I’m not a cat person" sort of way. Everyone thinks it’s cute, especially the cat. Well, everyone except the family dog. He’s pissed.
There’s a new tension in the house. The kitten wants to play and show it’s cuddly cuteness, the dog is soooo not impressed. I think it has a lot to do with the fact of the kitten finding the dog’s toys more enjoyable than the ones purchased for it’s entertainment. The pup may be a bit put out to have to share his first playmate with a purring, climbing, can’t hit the litter box right, allowed on the furniture enemy.
These days, the poor fur of love walks around with such a look of disappointment on his face. It’s sad and adorable at the same time. He walks me to the door when I leave the house as if to say, "Take me with you…rescue me from this whining, shedding piece of fluff…rescue me from this insistent attention ho I am now forces to live with…SAVE ME!" As it goes, I leave with so much guilt. I also smile to myself at the entertainment provided by the dynamics of four-legged creatures.
My friend says she has to constantly turn away from the doggy look that begs, "why didn’t you consult with me?" the look that says, "If it were not for my great love for you, I would be forced to bite you square in the ass for this great crime."
I have an on-going vision of visiting my friends in which the cat is still finding new ways of drawing attention to herself and the dog – the dog has his bags packed, ready and waiting for a new address.
Maybe it’ll all work out. Maybe the life of dogs and cats will come together. Maybe they will reach an agreement.
I can dream can’t I?
